Our Chosen Words:

* Nostalgia

* Power of the media

* Shock and awe

Nostalgia is defined as a wistful desire to return in thought or in fact to a former time in one’s life, to one’s homeland or to one’s family and friends; a sentimental yearning for the happiness of a former place or time. Therefore, you could argue that the family would be nostalgic as they would be wishing April to be back home safe and well, longing for the circumstances to be the what is was before she was taken. This would be the former time in their lives where they knew April was safe and happy and where there we no concerns over her health and wellbeing. Because of the stress the family is going through, I believe nostalgia would be one of the stronger feelings each member will contain as there would be no peace of mind within the family at this point in time. Nostalgia also relates with memory as an individual needs some form of recollection for a case of nostalgia to exist. In this case, the happy memories of April are what the family will be remembering in order for this case of nostalgia to occur.

This issue goes hand in hand with the power of the media and the influence it has over April’s return home for the reason that TV coverage will inform the public of the current turn of events, which makes it more likely for her to be found. This is because people out there will now be aware of the situation and also what the girl looks like as her face would have been broadcasted on TV and on the Internet, so if she is sighted anywhere, people will know to report it. What the power of the media does is it creates that awareness which widens the scope of people that has the potential of finding her. This topic is self-explanatory in the sense that it has power itself seeing that the use of TV coverage is the best way to get their message across as it has potential to bring April home.

Shock and awe plays a part as this would be the initial reaction of many people including members of the family after finding out the news. The shock and awe factor exists because of the tragic event that has taken place which relates back to nostalgia as the family would wish it had never happened resulting with April being home with them.
